National American Heart Month: Staying Heart Healthy in a Wheelchair

February is National American Heart Month. This is the perfect time to adjust your lifestyle to create healthy habits. Did you know that 1 in 4 deaths are heart health related? Although it may seem hard to do while confined to a wheelchair, we at Next Day Access are here to give you some easy tips to stay heart healthy!

  1.       Cardiovascular exercise

Having mobility needs can make cardiovascular exercise more challenging. However, this doesn’t make it impossible. There are many things you can do to get your heart rate up. Whether you dance in your chair or go for a long stroll, getting your heart pumping for at least 30 minutes a day will dramatically improve your cardiovascular health.

  1.       Weight training

Another way to get your heart pumping and improve your overall health is by lifting some weights. By doing small continuous repetitions for 15-30 minutes each day, you will not only increase your heart rate but also increase your strength. Both your core and arm strength will greatly benefit from just a few minutes of lifting each day.

  1.       Diet doesn’t mean don’t

Many people cringe when they hear the word diet. However, a diet doesn’t mean you have to stop eating all of the things you love. Some easy fixes include adding more spices instead of salt into your dishes. You can pack on flavor all while still staying heart healthy. Also, omega-3 fatty acids are great for heart health. From nuts and fish to leafy vegetables, there is something everyone will love.

  1.       Lose a little and gain a lot

By implementing the first three steps in this article, you should be able to lose some additional weight you have been trying to let go of. Small diet adjustments and increased exercise can help you shed those unwanted pounds. A good goal is to lose 1 pound a week until you reach a healthy weight and BMI.

This month, take some time to focus on your heart health! As always, be sure to talk to your doctor before starting a new diet or exercise plan. With just a few small changes you can increase your overall health and happiness!
