Stairlift FAQS
How does a Stairlift work?
It is important to know that stairlifts are bolted directly to the treads of a staircase, not the wall. This ensures that they are compatible with nearly any staircase, regardless of whether it has walls or banisters on either side. The chair and motor run along an aluminum rail, which is attached to your stairs with a mount on every few steps. While your stairlift is battery powered, the lift will need to be plugged in to keep the batteries charged– it requires a standard wall outlet, the same as you would plug a lamp into.
I only need a stairlift for a short period of time, can I rent one?
Many locations offer straight stairlifts for rental. They are a great option when you have a friend or relative visiting who needs assistance getting up the stairs, or while recovering from an injury. Rental options are more affordable than buying a lift. Custom curved stairlifts are not available for rental because they are custom-made to your staircase. In some situations, two straight units can be installed for rental use in split level homes or staircases that have landings in the middle. You also use that double unit option while you are waiting for your custom curved lift to be built.
What if I lose power?
Our stairlifts battery powered–the battery charges at the top or bottom of the rail. The unit will charge anytime it is not in use. In the case of a power outage, a fully charged unit will continue to run for multiple trips before needing to be charged again.
What is the weight capacity of a Stairlift?
Most standard units have a weight capacity of 275 lbs. to 350 lbs. There are heavy-duty lifts available with weight capacities of 600 lbs. Typically if the end user’s weight is near the capacity of a particular lift, we recommend moving to a higher-capacity stairlift. Heavy-duty lifts come with wider seats to ensure a comfortable ride.
Will the stairlift still allow people to use stairs?
Stairlifts usually only take up about 24” of space on the staircase, depending on the make and model. When not in use, the seat, arm rests, and footrest can be folded up to about 14” wide, creating more space on the stairs. Stairlifts also come with a remote control that can be used to send the chair to the top or bottom of the stairs when not in use.
My staircase is complicated – will a stair lift fit?
For the large majority of households, the answer is yes! There are two main types of stairlifts: straight rail, and custom curved rail. The straight rail variations are perfect for stairs that don’t have any turns, curves, or landings along the way.
Custom curved stair lifts are custom fabricated to fit a specific staircase. The turn corners and wrap around walls. Typically, we come to your home to take photo-survey of the staircase using a special 3-D camera. The images are then sent to the manufacturer to fabricate your custom railing. This is more complex.
