JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA, UNITED STATES, March 25, 2024 – Next Day Access is proud to announce the opening of the Next Day Access Northeast Florida franchise location.

After getting out of the US Coast Guard, Cathy and Drew met and fell in love, getting married in 1997. The first seventeen years of their marriage, they lived in the Tallahassee area while raising their family but moved to Jacksonville, FL for Drew’s career in Information Technology. Five years later, the Jolly family wound up in a difficult situation.

“In 2019,” Drew recounts, “my father was diagnosed with leukemia and his health quickly turned for the worse.” The Jolly’s were able to move his father in, where they were blessed to have him spend the last year together. “We had no idea what to do or expect; we had never prepared for anything like this,” Drew says. A military man himself, he got connected with the Jacksonville VA, which he calls a godsend for how they aided him in organizing treatment for his father. One thing the Jolly’s noticed during this experience is that there are many unfortunate decisions that all care givers must make, and the VA helped them navigate those decisions with minimal stress.

With their new perspective on life, they decided that now is the time to make a positive impact on the world, and they believe Next Day Access will help them make their dream a reality. “We will provide accessibility solutions to help our neighbors stay in their homes as long as possible, which will improve their quality of life,” Drew states. “I have a passion for helping people.” The Jolly’s are looking forward to helping their northeast Florida neighbors for many years to come.

With the harsh holiday season and delayed shipments, Next Day Access Richmond owner, Jesse Henby drives 300 plus miles in severe snowstorm for a stair lift to install in a customer’s home. 

There are many tasks and things people do in their daily lives that others cannot do without the help of another individual. That’s why Next Day Access provides accessibility and mobility solutions to help individuals with limited mobility live independently in their homes.

Accessibility Solution: the Stair Lift

Stair lifts are one of the many solutions. They help people age in place or with limited mobility go up or down the stairs. Living in a two-story home can become strenuous and dangerous when faced with an injury, recovery, or aging. But with this helpful accessibility solution, individuals can sit comfortably and glide along the staircase.

However, sometimes the need for a stair lift can be sudden and unexpected, leading to stress and urgency. A customer of Next Day Access Richmond faced just that.

The customer scheduled a date with Next Day Access to install a stair lift before bringing his wife home from the hospital. But due to the severe snowstorms and delayed deliveries, Henby realized the stair lift would not arrive in time to meet the customer’s needs because the package was inaccessible.

He scrambled and reached out to neighboring Next Day Access locations asking if they had any stair lifts available. Luckily, Next Day Access Baltimore had one available. With one of the core values of Next Day Access being “responsive,” every situation and customer is met with urgency.

Henby drove 300 plus miles to pick up the stair lift during a snowstorm to bring back to Richmond for his customer.

A fall for an aging loved one can be detrimental because their bones are more brittle causing a hospital visit. We at Next Day Access want to help prevent falls for you or your aging loved one.

We understand sometimes older adults could be on medication that could cause dizziness which makes them more likely to fall. To ensure safety this winter season, here is a list of tips to help you stay safe.

Fall Prevention Tips

  1. When getting out of a car, be sure to use a car handle that slides into your car door or a handle that attaches to the handle near the top of the door. Both help you lean down on them as you exit the vehicle. Once you have your footing, grab arms with your companion and slowly make your way indoors. 
  1. Use handrails when provided. Move slowly, taking your time to use the railing as far as it will get you.
  1. Wearing gloves keep your hands warm and can be helpful when gripping walls or rails. Keeping your hands free can improve your ability to maintain balance. Consider wearing a cross shoulder bag, backpack, or fanny pack.
  1. Concentrate on the path ahead without distractions, and walk slowly. Make sure to firmly plant each foot on the ground as you walk. 
  1. If you have your cell phone on you, call the family member or friend you are meeting. If you are by yourself, ask a store employee or manager to assist you.
  1. Plan ahead for your outing. If you notice treacherous, snowy, icy, rainy, or slippery weather, do your best to rearrange your plans. 
  1. Wear proper footwear. You get a pass on fashion during winter weather! Wear boots or shoes with textured soles with a grip on the bottom that adheres to messy weather. 
  1. If you need a mobility device to help, ensure you have one with a good grip.
  1.  Do not rush. If that means you must leave home sooner, so be it. Rushing can cause a slip. 
  1. Lastly, always ask for help! People are often willing to assist you.

Your Accessible Home Checklist

1. Entryway to Home

You will need to invest in a wheelchair ramp or a vertical platform installed at the front door. We also offer thresholds which allow mobility devices to maneuver over a front entry step.

This can help an aging adult enter the home with more ease. Lastly, make sure there is plenty of lighting in your entryway.  

2. Throughout the Home

  • Doorways need to have a 36-inch width to allow wheelchairs and walker devices room to maneuver. 
  • Area rugs are trip hazards. It is best to put away all area rugs. 
  • If the home is a 2-story, consider installing a stairlift or elevator to help you access your bedroom.
  • If you are in a wheelchair, to turn comfortably, you need a 60-inch open radius. Therefore, make sure furniture is arranged so you can move easily. 

3. In the Kitchen 

  • Arthritis or developing weakness can make turning knobs difficult. Instead, consider a touchless or lever handle faucet.
  • Move everyday items to accessible places and consider hide-away or pull-out cabinets for easier use. 

4. In the Bathroom 

  • The bathroom needs to be at least 5 feet by 8 feet to fit a wheelchair comfortably. 
  • Floors can become slippery. Installing non-slip flooring or non-slip mats can prevent falls. You can also include the non-slip mats in the bathtub. 
  • A shower chair and a hand-held shower needs to be installed in the shower. 
  • Grab bars need to be placed strategically throughout the bathroom. 
  • A walk-in-tub should be considered sooner than later. Stepping over a bathtub is a leading cause of severe falls for older adults.

Lastly, a ceiling lift for safe transfer is a fantastic solution to help if you or your loved one have limited mobility. A caregiver can assist with transfer from bed to chair or from room to room.

Remodeling your bathroom when a loved one becomes dependent on a wheelchair for mobility isn’t always an option. This is why we offer Fawssit portable showers for our customers. After a long day, a shower is a perfect way to relax and unwind. However, when you suffer from a disability or injury, showering can become difficult and dangerous. The shower is designed to help people using a wheelchair get in and out of the shower with ease. 

How the Fawssit Portable Shower Works 

The showers come assembled, so no tools or construction is required. The only two things you need are access to an electrical outlet and a sink. The unit is set up within 15 feet of a sink (if a longer distance is needed, you can contact the manufacturer, and they can make hoses to fit your home up to 30 feet). The sides of the shower fold open and secure with velcro straps. The unit comes with a vinyl drain pan that sits on the bottom. The front opens, so the wheelchair user enters and exits the unit. Attach the shower head to the sink faucet, plug the pump into a 3-prong outlet, and voila, you have a portable shower!

Once done showering, there is no need to wait for the pan to drain. The pan is designed to keep water from leaking when the wheelchair user exits. When the individual is done showering, turn off the pump, dry the water off from the curtain and pan, then fold the unit to be stored away until its next usage.

Discussing your aging loved one’s driving days coming to an end is not easy; yet, it is a meaningful and necessary conversation. Your loved one might express frustration towards giving up the freedom to drive, but ultimately it is safer for them and others on the road. It is common for older adults to have slow reaction times and hearing or vision problems. Other than health issues, how can you tell you need to take on driving? The best approach is to look for warning signs before the conversation. This way, you will know if you need to insist on talking about it because there are real reasons to be worried, or are you off base, and their driving skills are still going strong? Here are a few signs.  

Their Car Has New Scrapes or Dents 

Look over your loved one’s car. Do you see any fresh dents or scrapes? Is there any damage near their garage, garden, or mailbox? Any dents or scrapes on their vehicle indicate they could be misjudging the space around them. You should also try to find out if they recently received a ticket or traffic warning. Did their auto insurance increase for any reason? If so, discuss this with your loved one. 

Driving has Become Mentally Difficult 

Look for signs that your loved one seems agitated or tired while driving. This could indicate they are having a tough time. Often the cause of their irritation could be because of a hindering physical disability. Here are a few signs that indicate driving might have become stressful for them: 

  • They get lost easily, even in familiar areas. 
  • They struggle turning the car around or backing up. 
  • They have trouble seeing traffic signals or road signs.  
  • They mix up the brake and gas pedals or press both at the same time. 
  • They respond slowly to unexpected situations. 
  • Other drivers honk at your loved one because of their driving.

They Have Too Many Close Calls 

A sure sign your parent/grandparents’ driving skills are declining is they have had too many narrowly missed accidents. Sometimes, this happens due to misjudging gaps in traffic, misreading traffic signals or road signs, or underestimating the speed of oncoming cars.

Driving can be risky business. It is best to be proactive when assessing your parent’s driving. They may worry losing their ability to drive can make them a burden or make them feel less independent. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law on July 26, 1990, by President George H.W. Bush. The ADA is civil rights legislation prohibiting discrimination and guaranteeing people with disabilities the same opportunities as everyone else. The guidelines help ensure that anyone with a disability can enjoy the same employment opportunities, shop hassle-free, and freely participate in any state or local government programs and services. Essentially, the ADA is an equal opportunity law put in place for people with disabilities. 

If you are opening a new business that caters to the public and has over 15 employees, you will need to follow ADA guidelines when designing your floor plan. It is against the law to ignore these guidelines. The ADA website has a list of the exact measurements and the standards, when installing accessible equipment. How Large is your Entrance? 

Ensure your doorways are wide enough that wheelchairs or other mobility devices can enter comfortably. Also, make sure that there are access doors in place.

Are Your Aisles Obstacle Free? 

Ask yourself if it will be challenging for anyone with a mobility device to navigate the aisles or reach the shelves? Is it easy for them to get around? Will they feel embarrassed trying to maneuver around tables or chairs scattered around corridors or hallways? 

Are your Bathrooms Easily Accessible? 

Even if you only have one stall, make sure the stall is wide enough that a mobility device can maneuver. Additionally, it is essential to have grab bars and an outward swinging door. Grab bars can allow for a safe transfer from a mobility device to the toilet. Other modifications such as a wall-mounted or pedestal sink are ideal for wheelchair accessibility, giving full use of the sink.   

Again, make sure to obtain a copy of the current ADA standards and review these in detail to see which ones apply to your business.
